New year, new bedroom: Ideas to refresh your master space.
If your bedroom needs a refresh or an upgrade, here are six ways to bring some love to an often neglected space. Because it’s private, a master bedroom can be last on the list when decorating a home. And while it may not be visible to guests, it is as important as any other room. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, a luxurious private space to recharge, relax and retreat. Be inspired!
1. Add a statement headboard.
Calico has a line of upholstered headboards that can attach to a metal bed frame—and even an upholstered frame to create a beautiful base for the mattress and box spring. These pieces are solidly constructed by a furniture manufacturer in North Carolina and covered in the Calico fabric of your choice. They will last for decades—and can be recovered when desired.
Create a clean, streamlined bed if the room is filled with detailed furniture, art, photos and artifacts. Or choose a headboard with some curves to balance a bedroom with lots of square lines.
The Cutaway Headboard above features graceful curves at the corners and can be ordered in three different heights; when choosing the right height, consider whether you read or watch TV in bed and want a tall headboard and shams for back support. 2. Update the bedding, shams and pillows for a new bedscape.
Calico custom bedding options include comforters and coverlets, duvet covers, bedskirts, pillows and shams—all made just for you, so they will complement window treatments and upholstered pieces in the room. This ensures a perfect fit for deep mattresses, antique beds and special sizes.
The master bedroom is the perfect place to express your style, a judgment-free zone to make it your own. Choose soft fabrics and favorite textures for custom bedding—velvet, chenille, silky cotton, faux suede, slubbed silk, crisp linen or puffy matelassé.
Finishing touches such as welting or trims will make these elements uniquely your own. Dressmaker details include cording, tapes, buttons, ribbons and ruffles.
3. Layer textures and colors for visual interest.
If you prefer a monochromatic room, vary the hues and add accessories in accent colors to avoid the look of a hotel room. The bed should be the centerpiece of the room.
4. Add an upholstered bench, ottoman or settee at the foot of the bed.
It’s the perfect place to put on shoes, pack a bag or place unneeded bedding at night.
5. Create window treatments to complement the bed.
Luxurious window treatments will balance the bed visually and soften the architecture of the room. Bonus: whether hard or soft, draperies or shades add privacy and light control! Calico’s custom window treatments can be made with eight different linings to add body and insulate against heat and cold. Linings also darken rooms to help you sleep better.
Hunter Douglas shades in a dozen styles and umpteen colors can be layered beneath drapery panels for variable light control—and can be automated too.
6. Play with pattern.
If you love pattern, look to window treatments, wallcovering, pillows or shams as the perfect place to style up. Be sure there are some solid color surfaces for the eye to rest.
This girl’s room features an upholstered headboard, matelasse coverlet and shams (with giant pom-pom trim) on the bed. Pinstripe draperies banded in green complement shaped cornices in a colorful floral print that repeats on a decorative pillow. Who wouldn’t love to read a story to a child in this bed?
If your bed doesn’t make a statement on its own, select a designer fabric to add visual interest and complement the bed frame. When mixing patterns, be sure that one will dominate and that the others will complement, not compete.
7. One last tip: Make the bed!
If you have created a dream bed, show it some love and make it up each morning. It’s so much more inviting to climb into a beautifully made bed that is ready to soothe you to sleep.
